Chapter One
It was a dark and stormy night, the storm had been raging on for hours. The pirate ship that was landed near the island of Madagascar was being slammed into the walls of the island. The pirates that usually sleep in the ship were now on the island in a cave that was large and very cool. The pirate captain of the ship was pacing waiting for his own pirate doctor to tell him the work of his wife who was currently in labor with their first child. He had hoped that it would be a boy so that he would have a younger one to take on the job when he died at a rational time in a battle or something.
"Captain Lernard your wife she gave birth to a baby girl she named her Calypso for the storm ragging outside and because of the goddess as well. The bad news is, sir, is that your wife, after naming the child, well your...your wife died, sir. I am really sorry for your inconvenience. I advise you to take the girl but there is something so different about her that will amaze you sir wait till you see her." said the doctor who lead the captain to the child.
The child lay in a blanket her hair was pure black and thick and also very silky. Her eyes got him the most, those eyes were silver white with black pupils and then there was the crescent moon by the pupil. But there was also a mark on her forehead it was also the symbol of the crescent moon which looked like a tattoo almost.
"She is so beautiful. After this storm is done and we collect a few things for food we will be taking her to my wife's sister who will take care of her. She lives on a farm fifty miles plus from the nearest town and she also has woods but lives right on the ruffs of a cliff but she has great grass lands as well. We will be taking my daughter to her then my daughter can live there for fourteen years." said the captain who then left the room. The baby was now in the doctor's arms.
The storm was done and the ship was partially damaged but at least they had enough supplies to fix it and they would be able to leave by noon. Calypso was alone in the cave with the doctor who was of course watching over her and suddenly a monkey jumped out of no where at the front of the cave. It had a long tail with black and white rings around it and mostly gray body and a black mask.
"That is a lemur, calypso, the strange creature of this island." said the doctor who looked at it. The lemur was extremely small about a month old and very tiny. It walked over to Calypso and cuddled near her.
"Oh, how cute we should keep it for you calypso what should we call it? how about majestic." said the doctor. who wrapped the lemur up and took it with calypso to the ship which they set sail.
Many moons have passed since they left the island of Madagascar and Captain Lernard finally reached their destination where his sister in law lived at the current time. It was a full moon again and the captain brought his only child Calypso up to the home where she would stay for fourteen years with her aunt and then he would return to the island and bring her back to the sea.
“Captain Lernard, what a surprise that you’re here. What brings you to this island Captain?” asked Angelia who opened the door and stood aside for the captain to enter the home.
“Angelia I have some bad news about your sister. She passed away after giving birth to our first child Calypso who I had to bring to you. I would want you to take care of her for the time being till I come back after fourteen years. I know this is unexpected but since we don’t have another women on bored I thought it would be best for you to raise her instead of the men on board my ship. She will be more civilized.” said Lernard.
“This is unexpected Captain but if you must I will take her in and raise her myself but I will tell her about her mother but not really about you. She is a beautiful baby you know that when she turns fourteen she will still wonder about her mother and who exactly her father was. I will take her in Captain for your sake and Calypso’s sake as well.” said Angelia.
Angelia took the child out of the captain’s hands and held her tight. Angelia knew only one thing other then the fact that this child was something special but this was her only other sibling’s child. Angelia then looked back at the captain with wondering eyes that meant only one thing: ‘don’t betray my trust.’ look and she then wondered why Calypso felt so heavy and looked to see what was with the child. Inside the blanket with Calypso was the lemur who was brought back with the pirates from Madagascar.
“The lemur was extremely fond of Calypso and I couldn’t have it part with her so I let the lemur be with Calypso as a pet and a reminder of the fact that she wasn’t born here on the island. I know its not much but it’s the only gift that I have for her and I hope that you won’t mind the lemur its sometimes goes crazy but its still an animal all the same. Please take the lemur in as well. Thank you so much for taking my daughter in it means so much. It also would mean so much to your sister as well.” said Lernard.
“Its my pleasure Captain I will raise her to be a good child and some what civilized but she will, I know, be exactly like her mother. She will be as free as a bird and will go where she pleases because she has that kind of spirit Lernard. Do you know why she has the half moon symbol on her forehead? You do know that is the sign of the Greek goddess Selene and also it means if a child where to wear the crescent moon they are gifted with a special kind of power. I hope you keep that in mind but it also depends on the age when the power will kick in and when they were born.” said Angelia.
“Great a child with a mark that will eventually have an astounding power that no one knows about. Do you know of any other child born like Calypso, Angelia?” asked Lernard.
“I know of one but she was born two years after me and that was twenty eight years ago Lernard. But the women who was born like Calypso lives on this island in the town fifty miles from here. Oh, by the way I have to let you know this too that when a person born with this mark is married and has children the children also have powers but not exactly like their parents but they have different powers. Those that are born from the one who has the crescent mark also have the mark on their forehead.” said Angelia.
“You always leave me with something to think about Angelia but I am glad of that, but now I must go back to my ship and pirate around like always but I will be back. Fourteen years Angelia, fourteen years I will return to this island and take Calypso with me as promised I would. I will be back.” said Captain Lernard who then left the home and went back to the ship.
The ship left with its sails as black as midnight and its work of art as always. For thence on the ship will be know now as the Black pearl of Calypso. For Calypso, Lernard’s daughter was named from the heathen goddess of Calypso who was known to has power over the whole ocean. But See the thing is Calypso had a secret not known yet.
Chapter Two
Fourteen years later:
"Calypso please come out here and help me with my garden. Oh don't forget that we have to go into the market today and pick a few things up and maybe sell a few things too." said Angelia.
"Yes, I am coming just one minute and I will be out there." said Calypso who was currently finishing reading her own book she snuck out of the library.
Calypso ran outside with her lemur and they both began to help her aunt with the work that she had to do or else she would be in a lot of trouble with her. They planted a lot of veggies and a lot of herbs that would be better then anything to help them serve the towns people.
It was an hour later when they started heading into town and they were carrying bags of herbs and fresh ointments along with many other things. They were getting ready to serve and gain money from the people along with other things.
"We will be bringing three horses to town it will be quicker and easier for us and we don't have to carry to many things while walking. We will be riding the horses." said Angelia. They headed out of the farm and started going into the town.
Calypso was extremely thrilled because now she could go back to the library and get some more books to read for the time being but because she had to hide the books she had to be extremely secretive about the whole thing.
"You know majestic I have been wondering about a few things even though our aunt didn't really mention it but I was wondering who my parents were. All she ever says when I mention it is that my mom died and my dad brought me here and left without explaining anything. I think there is something up and no one is explaining things to us. What do you think majestic?" said Calypso to her lemur who was her best friend and obeyed her at any given time of the day.
"Are you talking to your lemur again Calypso? Man your lemur is always with you doesn't it ever leave you be, Calypso?" asked Angelia who was ahead of her.
"Yeah, why? is that a bad thing that I am talking to Majestic? She is my only friend that I Can really talk to anyway not saying anything about you of course." said Calypso.
“Its not a bad thing Calypso its just…its just odd that a young girl like you is talking to an animal like that as if it is a real person. The point that I am trying to make is that I think you should make some friends in town and run around together. I know it is a long ways away but so what you at least could make some friends there.” said Angelia who looked back at Calypso.
“Okay! I will go around the town and so on if that’s okay with you aunt Angelia I know you will need my help later today when we pack away some things but when we are there I hope to walk around the town then. If that’s okay with you of course?” said Calypso as she rode up next to her aunt.
“That will be fine as long as you stay out of trouble and away from the adult towns people. You know how they think of you and you shouldn’t get in their way Calypso and while we are in town I want you to deliver some things to the Doctor’s office for me if you would. It would only be a quick one and you don’t have to stay long anyway.” said Angelia who then fell silent.
As they rode onward to the town they failed to see the pirate ship anchored right on the shore. It was near six in the after noon when they reached the nearest village that they planned on selling their things and buying a few things for the next year till the next festival which was a year away after this one. Calypso rode behind her aunt and when they got to the stall that they would sell their things Calypso tied off the horses by the stall and helped take off their things.
“I will go now and bring that thing for the doctor now if you truly want me to aunt Angelia. Then I will be off searching.” said Calypso who had her book hidden in her peasant top which was loose on her.
“Okay but make sure you are back in two hours for supper and then meet me at the inn at ten okay? Don’t be late again Calypso or you won’t be able to go to the family get together next month and I know you like those too.” said Angelia.
“Yes aunt Angelia as you say. I will be back don’t worry about it I will make sure of it.” said Calypso as she ran off to the doctor’s office and then she was going to the Library to sneak a few other books for the year maybe five at the most.
As she got to the doctors office before she reached the office door a boy, by the looks of seemed at the age of 12 years old, and his mom came out of there. The boy looked tired and wore out and pale, he also had light brown hair and he also seemed to have bluish eyes with little crescent moons in them as well as hers and the mother‘s eyes had the same mark. To her surprise the boy had a crescent moon on his forehead and so did his mother and Calypso wondered what the crescent moon meant, but that would have to wait till later. Calypso stopped to let them leave before she entered the office.
“Come on Ivo we should get back home and so you can rest, the doctor said you needed the rest more then anything else and I won’t let my son get a worse cold then what he already has.” said the boys mother.
“Come on mother do I have to go in bed and rest while the activities are out here and where all the rest of the children are having fun. It wouldn’t be fair if I have to stay in bed while I hear everyone else have fun.” said Ivo.
“No, you are going up to your room and you are resting that is my final answer or do you want to go to bed with no supper again Ivo. I doubt your father would be pleased.” said Ivo’s mother.
The boy fallowed his mother but when his mother’s back was turned Ivo looked back to look at Calypso with a questioning look and he turned back to his mother in a total air of silence which to Calypso wasn’t so reassuring.
“I’ll come find you and lets talk I will find you.” whispered Calypso to the boy named Ivo as he looked at her and he nodded and disappeared with his mother.
“Doctor Vand**e here is the medicine you wanted from Angelia she wanted me to give them to you when we got here but she is sorry she couldn’t bring them to you herself but she is very busy the way it is.” said Calypso.
“That’s alright Calypso. Thank you for bringing the medicine here I am grateful for your aunt if it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t have what I need to help those who are sick. Say thank you to your aunt and here is for your trouble Calypso.” said Doctor Vand**e who tossed her a silver round coin. (Which here it would be worth five dollars).
“Thank you Doctor Vand**e I will let my aunt know what you said and it would please her to know what you said. You know she thinks very highly of you and she wouldn’t like it if you got out of business.” said Calypso.
The doctor winked at her and he went on his way for the other patients who were waiting for him with sicknesses and other things. Calypso when back outside and was walking down the streets bear foot and looking around to spot the boy Ivo who she saw earlier. Then she saw him in the window looking out to the streets with a very sad expression on his face but when he saw Calypso looking up him he nodded and opened his window slightly and crawled down. The window wasn’t where people could see very easily and it was somewhere, where a person had to look in order to see the window.
“Thank gosh you are here I was wondering when you were ever going to come find me. My name is Ivo. What is your name?” asked Ivo.
“My name is Calypso and this is majestic my lemur who I was told by my aunt was brought with me. I wasn’t born here on this island but the island called Madagascar which is quite far from here. How about you where were you born?” asked Calypso who leaned up against the wall of Ivo’s home.
“I was born here my mom said that my father was a two timing thief who stole from the rich on the island but he died three years ago so it doesn’t matter anyway. My mom is getting older and older and she doesn’t spend a lot of time with me very much anymore and the only time she does spend time with me is when I am sick or when I get in trouble with the town’s people. Other then that she doesn’t even look at me if you know what I mean. How did you get that Crescent moon on your head Calypso?” said Ivo then continued
“I was wondering because my mother has the same kind of mark on her forehead and has the same crescents in her eyes. I do to but then again I don‘t know what they mean, maybe we are a new breed of some sort. I wonder if we have some sort of power but then again maybe not. How about your mom and dad?”
“Well my aunt, the one I live with, said that my mom died just after delivering me and my dad just abandoned me here with her because he didn’t want anything to do with me because I was a girl not a boy like he wanted. So I guess the only family member I have is really my aunt and my lemur majestic who doesn’t like very many people except me. I don‘t know about the crescents though but my aunt said that the Greek goddess Selene has blessed me, and those very few who have the mark and granted safety as well but I am thinking on the same line as you.” said Calypso.
“I am sorry to hear about your mother Calypso well at least we both have lost a parent but then again who needs them anyway. Hey, quit tickling me.” Ivo suddenly said. Majestic was on Ivo curling around his neck and went into his lap to look up at him with big eyes.
“I guess she likes you, as I have said Majestic doesn’t like many people but then again you never know. Animals are very strange creatures and all but I love my dear Majestic because she is the only pet I have ever had and I would die if something ever happen to her. Do you read Ivo? I do its fun but it takes time when you don’t have someone teaching you how to read at times though. Majestic up.” said Calypso. Majestic jumped up and climbed Calypso’s arm and sat on her shoulder.
“Your aunt does she sell herbs to the doctor and many of the towns people? Is your aunt by chance Angelia? Yeah sometimes though I just sneak off and get some books then I escape the library and then read them. I guess I inherited my fathers gift of being a thief.” asked Ivo.
“I do the same thing because it’s the only way for me to get books to read at times. Yes my aunt sells herbs to the doctor and many of the people here in town for the year and what we have left is ours to spare. Also my aunt is Angelia why do you ask that Ivo?” asked Calypso.
“My mom has always wanted to meet Angelia but has never had the chance to ever meet her because my mom has always been so busy working making blankets and things like that so she has no time. She would be happy to meet your aunt could you possibly arrange a meeting for her please?” asked Ivo.
“I will try but that doesn’t mean its going to actually happen and I will see what my aunt says and if she says sure I will bring my mom here to see your mom.” said Calypso who was looking out at the ocean.
“That would be such a relief for her to actually meet Angelia in person because my mother really thinks highly of your aunt and if she could meet her it would cheer her up for ten years. You know we could be great allies because we both are good thieves and we are great at other things maybe, if your aunt will allow it, you both can stay in town for a while and we can go take a look around the town and steal a few things as well. But we won‘t take a lot of things though maybe a few things but not a lot that people would miss though.” said Ivo.
“That’s a possibility though we would make a great team and maybe we could become pirates some day if we could at the time. Promise me if you go anywhere you would invite me to go along with you. I will promise you the same thing if I go somewhere I will take you along with me no matter how far or how long I won‘t forget to get you to have you go along with me.” said Calypso.
“Ivo you little rascal where are you, you better let me in or there is trouble to pay young man if you don’t let me in, in thirty seconds you are so in big trouble young man.” said Ivo’s mother.
“I promise that I will let you know if I go anywhere I will let you know and bring you along with me same thing it’s a deal. I better go my mother would kill me if I don’t go up and unlock the door you know how adults are they won’t let you do anything if you mess up. It was nice talking to you Calypso maybe I will see you next time.” said Ivo who climbed up the wall and made it up to his room.
Calypso watched as her new friend made it up to his room and then she slowly slipped away to go to the library to get a few more books and drop one off and she knew that she had to do this stealthily. She would have found another way but she didn’t want her aunt to know she learned to read but oh well. Calypso reached the library and put the book where it belonged and went and got at least five other books that looked to be good books to her and she snuck out of the library again.
“Well this is one way to get what I need. Now I still have time to do some reading while I wait to go to my aunt who would surly kill me if I don’t make it to her on time. Majestic I am glad we made friends here its so nice to have someone who is human and roughly my age to talk to. What do you think of Ivo Majestic?” asked Calypso who scratched her head. Majestic just stretched as her way of saying she liked Ivo as much as Calypso did. Calypso just smiled at Majestic.Chapter Three
An hour and a half went by and Calypso decided it was better to go to her aunt now then never because she knew her aunt didn’t want any trouble from her. Calypso ran to the stall and her aunt was there getting ready to pack the things away when Calypso got there. Calypso found her bag and put the books in there and went to her aunt and do a lot of the packing.
“We are going to the inn and staying there for the night we also will have some dinner there because it is safer and a lot cheaper that way. Did you have a good time around the town, Calypso?” Angelia asked.
“Yeah I met a boy named Ivo and to tell you the truth I saw that he had the same crescent moon symbol on his forehead and the same marks around his eyes. What does this mean aunt Angelia?” Calypso asked.
“Well, Calypso, the symbol as I have said before is the symbol of the Greek goddess Selene who has gifted you and of course Ivo. There was a legend about these people who had these marks and the legend stated that those who were blessed with the mark would have extreme power which is unknown because there are so many different powers. One with the symbol could be able to shape shift into animals, have a power of invisibility, reading minds, time travel and so on there are so many but one could have all those powers as well. I don’t know about you though Calypso because the power doesn’t occur till your fourteen which you will turn tomorrow.” said Angelia.
“Okay, if by chance I would be able to transform into animals, to shape shift, could a person be more then one animal or just one animal? I was curious because it seems to me that this could be an advantage and disadvantage as well.” Calypso stated.
“You don’t give up on the questions do you? Well as far as the legend said a person may be able to shape shift, if that was their gift, into more then just one animal but that isn’t a guarantee though. Since you were born at see Calypso, I have a feeling that you were gifted by more then one goddess. Its possible that the heathen goddess Calypso, the first one, may have granted you power as well but what I don’t know yet or either do you but you may soon enough.” said Angelia who opened the door to the inn and rented a room for a few nights and told Calypso to go to the room to put the stuff in and ordered her to come back down for dinner.
Calypso did as she was told and put her stuff on one bed and the other stuff on Angelia’s bed and went back down to her aunt. She loved the night and wanted to be in it but she also knew that her aunt wouldn’t allow her to do just that but she would find a way to get outside that night. Calypso found Angelia sitting at a small table with two soup bowls and a small loaf of bread and a good chunk of cheese which, to Calypso, was a good meal though kind of strange but it didn’t bother her. Calypso when getting to the table sat across the table from her aunt and looked into the soup bowl and noticed that it was vegetable soup and not the other kind of soup with meat in it. Majestic came down and went to sleep in her lap curling up in a ball of fur and it looked to Calypso like a small furry pillow.
“Calypso when we are done here you must go and find some sweet kind of fruit and something sweet for Majestic, she looks hungry and you probably would do well to find something to fill her up. I know I don’t like you out at night but tonight is an exception go and find something for the lemur of yours and return quickly after getting it.” said Angelia.
“Is there something you don’t want me to know about aunt Angelia? I can sense that you have something hidden and you don’t want me to know just yet. What is the problem because if it has to do with me I must know now rather then later aunty.”
“There is one thing that I haven’t told you about yet that you must know now rather then later. You know the story that I told you about your parents that your mother died just after giving birth to you and your father abandoned you? Well your mother was my sister who grew up and fell in love with a man who…was a pirate and after your mother died he brought you here to me to raise you till your fourteen. It was the deal Calypso.” said Angelia.
“WHAT! My mother turned pirate because the man she fell in love with was a pirate? That is just plain creepy. So does that mean I am a pirate aunt Angelia?”
“Keep your voice down Calypso I don’t want you to shout here. Yes she became a pirate, in fact she was known to be the most vicious of all the pirates but also keeping to the pirate code. Your father is the strongest and also is known for his viciousness too. All your fathers men, well except for their doctor, are the same as him. But Yes that does mean you’re a pirate and you do have both of your parents sides to you for you steal really well and all that. You get in trouble but I guess that’s the pirate blood in you. I am proud of my sister and all but I am also proud to raise her only child as well.” said Angelia.
Calypso couldn’t help but smile at the comment that her aunt said though it worried her that she was a pirate. She would go straight to Ivo’s house and see if he had anything for Majestic and then she would tell him everything that she was told by her aunt. She knew that because Ivo was good at being a thief he would be able to sneak out of his room that night and talk to her though she wondered if she should go to him instead. She had to eat before she even left the inn although she would have thought other wise but her aunt would make her stay till she ate her soup, which in fact was good and not like those really nasty kind of soups either.
“May I be excused Angelia? I am done with my soup and would like to get some food for Majestic so she won’t have to wait any longer for her meal. Although I was wondering of something that you had said earlier a few years back and this is bothering me. Is he truly coming back to get me Angelia?” Calypso said twenty minutes later.
“Yes he is though he won’t come get you right away for he would want to come into town and get some supplies and other things and let his men rest after all the times traveling as well. Don’t worry about it, you are still safe and you won’t leave right away Calypso. Yes your excused from the table go and find something to feed Majestic.”
“Thank you Angelia this means a great deal to me. Oh, one more question, when are we going back to our home? I was wondering because I would like to bring Ivo there for a while so he can see where I live with you. Umm, Angelia, Ivo’s mother would like to meet you sometime if you would meet with her I can tell Ivo and he can tell his mother what you think.” Calypso said.
“Well since Ivo is your friend it wouldn’t hurt for me to meet his mother and get to know her either. I would like to meet Ivo’s mother tomorrow afternoon maybe one thirty if that’s possible. We will be going back not tomorrow but the day after Calypso and I think that’s nice of you for wanting to bring Ivo along so he can see our home. Okay you may go talk to him for a little while but not to late its only eight thirty so go but be back here.”
“Don’t worry I will be back here. I promise that to you at least aunt Angelia although I may stay out longer just for purposes of my own but I will be back. I am kidding I will be back right away.” said Calypso and her aunt rolled her eyes in a way saying ‘what am I going to do with you child.’ look.
After leaving the inn Calypso snuck out around the buildings with Majestic on her shoulder making as little noise as possible. Calypso was slow moving and finally got to the last street that would lead to Ivo’s house which was at the very end of the of the street which was large. When Calypso and Majestic got to the house Calypso noticed that there was a lamp on in Ivo’s room and she began to climb up the side of the house by the vines that were attached to the home. When she got up there she pushed the window open and slipped in making little noise and went to sit next to Ivo who hadn’t noticed that she was in the room with him.
“Ivo? Hey I returned with some message for you from my aunt, I also have some news for you, along with one thing that I need from you. I know its late but I need to tell you these things.” said Calypso to her friend.
“What is it? What did your aunt say? What is wrong Calypso? Calypso, you look tired, pale and totally exhausted. I had my mom bring some fruit up here for me but I don’t like some of them but would Majestic want one of them?” said Ivo.
“First off my aunt said she wouldn’t mind meeting with your mom sometime in the afternoon preferably at one thirty. Second my aunt told me that I have a father who is a Pirate and he is coming for me when I turn fourteen which is tomorrow and I really don’t want to know my father but I also do. I don’t want to leave the island I don’t want to leave my aunt here alone but I have Pirate blood in me and I have always been connected with any kind of water no matter if it’s a lake, pond, river, or stream. As I promised I will take you with me even if I have to smuggle you on the ship with me. Majestic won‘t mind.” said Calypso smiling at Ivo.
“Well I see your point. Oh, by the way happy birthday if I don’t get a chance to say it tomorrow when I see you then so I just thought I should say it now rather then later. I may get you something if you don’t mind but you are hard to get for because you seem like the type that you don’t want people to by gifts for you.” said Ivo.
“You figured that out already? You know you don’t have to get me anything I am just as happy having you as a friend then getting gifts from people. Thanks for the thought though. What are you doing tomorrow anyway, anything interesting? I am going to be walking around town but other then that I don’t have anything to do otherwise, maybe we can hang out.” said Calypso.
“Well my mom will be busy buying me new cloths and buying herself new dresses but I have nothing to do anyway so that would be a good idea we can go into the old castle and see what we can find there. Before we go there we can sneak some food off of someone and put it in a small hankie, if you have one of course. We could also sneak a bag off of the bag maker who also makes leather from the hides of deer that his sons hunt. We could get two or maybe one if we can without getting caught.” said Ivo who had changed his position on his chair.
“That sounds really exciting that should be a lot more fun then anything else. The castle would be scary but also something to do during the day rather then not doing anything fun. Hmm, I wonder what’s in the castle. Do you know who, at one time, lived there Ivo?”
“My mom said it used to be this old warlord that used to live there and that he was something else entirely something that we really don’t consider and that he was one that was extremely dangerous in his time. Well before he got killed at the hands of his own daughter but she later died by the king who found out about his warlord’s death and he later sentenced her to the gallows, also a place of death. It was a wicked story and we may find out more about it in the castle when we get to the library and it may be there somewhere.” said Ivo.
“What made him extremely dangerous besides the fact that he was a warlord? I mean what caused him to be so…different other then the fact he was great in battle? I heard that there was many things that caused this island a lot of trouble and such but others won’t answer the questions because they are to afraid that if they talk about it the thing will come back.” said Calypso.
“There was a rumor that there, at one time, was an ancient plague that come through and it caused something that seemed like a disease but it ended up to be something else and it destroyed over half of the island’s population. There was only ten people left on the island with the disease that came from the ancient plague and from then on the very few people who survived became the Immortals and now the population grew vast and now some have created their own ruling. It was an ancient rumor that became legend and people began to believe that it was true.” said Ivo.
“That’s just plain creepy and weird. So do you believe the rumor of this plague, Ivo? It sounds to me that it could possibly be true but when we get into the castle we may find out more of this so called disease. I have to go my aunt will be furious at me if I don’t come back so I will talk with you later Ivo and I will see you later as well.” Calypso said getting up from her chair.
“Okay, well I will see you later then have a good night and happy birthday again I hope you have a good night. I will meet you by the doctor’s office tomorrow and we can see what we can do about nicking some stuff. You may take some of the fruit for Majestic if you want.” said Ivo.
“Yeah you to and thanks again for wishing me a happy birthday. I will meet you at the office then and we will make plans for the day. I will then see you later on tomorrow and you have a good night as well.” said Calypso who did take some of the fruit that Ivo offered her to take.
Calypso then, after taking some only three little fruits, went to the window and climbed down the way she came up and with Majestic on her shoulder she ran to the inn where her aunt waited for her. Calypso went to the room and put the fruit on her bed and saw that her aunt stayed up to wait for her with amused eyes that only told Calypso that she made her aunt smile inside. Calypso smiled and took out her old T-shirt and put on and climbed into bed with a tired yawn and she put the fruits on Majestic’s bed and she turned to face her aunt in bed.
“Calypso I wanted to give this to you before tomorrow so that you can store it away in your bag. It’s a birthday gift that I bought while you were over at Ivo’s tonight and I thought you may enjoy it because it talks about pirate history and there is another one that talks about the history of the island.” said Angelia who handed her two packages.
Chapter Four
Calypso woke the next morning pleased with herself for now being fourteen years old. She was absolutely thrilled that her aunt had, some how, figured out that she, Calypso could read so her aunt, who said she bought them last night, got her two books. One was indeed a history of Pirates and family trees of pirates, and the other was the full history of the island where Angelia and Calypso now lived.
Calypso quickly got dressed into a baggy peasant top and old brown breeches that were far more comfortable then any other outfits that she owned, even though she didn’t have a lot just her mothers old cloths. Calypso ran down and entered the streets of the town and looked for her aunt who was now standing by her stand selling some stuff to an old women who was a famous and well known seer, a person who saw the future. Calypso ran to her aunt and checked if she needed help with anything at the stand and told her that Ivo’s mom will be coming to see her that very same day. Her aunt told her that she didn’t need help and told Calypso to go and have fun with Ivo who was waiting for her at the office.
“Good you’re here I was beginning to wonder if you were coming or not but you’re here and that is all that matter now. Okay I will nick the bags while you can nick the food. How does that sound?” asked Ivo.
“Better then I had hoped, I will nick some bread, apples, some pieces of dried meat, and I will nick some water skins and I will meet you back here where we can pack our bags with the stuff that I got. Okay lets get going before people think we look suspicious or something.” Calypso stated and turned around and went to get her stuff with Majestic fallowing after her. Calypso had told Majestic what to grab while she got the other stuff.
Twenty minutes went by when Calypso brought the stuff she got and what Majestic had gotten as well. Ivo was already waiting for her with two bags that looked like backpacks that had one compartment to hold things and one zipper to open and close the bag to keep things out of the bag and the stuff inside. Calypso hurried over and put the double stuff in the bags, one in each bag and she also, not only getting the food, she nicked some parchment (which is paper) and two pens. They both, carrying their individual bags and Calypso with Majestic, headed towards the castle that awaited their adventurous hearts.
“Wonder if there is any gold still left in the castle, and if there is we will split it half and half and then put what we can in our bags and get the rest later. I wonder what kind of enchantments are left in the castle still because I have heard there was many enchantments on castles back in the day.” said Ivo who looked sideways at Calypso.
“There possibly will be enchantments but not only that but there may be dangers that we will soon face and there will be things that we will have to do to survive the castle. Sounds good that we are splitting the gold, if there is any gold to split, but if there is what are we going to spend all of it on?” asked Calypso who was now skipping around and spinning ahead now with a little happiness in her step.
“I don’t know possibly buy our own cloths and then go onto another adventure by buying stuff for our ship, if we get one that is, but we could give it to a few people who live on the streets. That would be a good thing wouldn’t it?” asked Ivo who was running to keep up with Calypso.
“You mean beggars and stuff? But yeah that would be a wonderful thing everyone needs money to survive this world and why not help those in need but the straight answer would be yes. You know ever since I found out about who my father was I realize that I am him but I am not even though I don’t know exactly who he is. I mean I can nick things easily and stuff but I mean I will always help those who need the help so I guess I am like him and I am like my mother.” said Calypso who stopped and walked slower and that made Ivo nearly run into her.
“Calypso you know you are my first and true friend that I have ever had and if I know who you are you are not like a pirate who will steal gold and keep it for herself/himself but one who would want it but then give it away. You are a great person who can nick things better then other girls but that is exactly my point you are one who will help herself but then help others no matter what happens. That is what makes you for who you are. Don’t judge yourself by what other people say or do, just be yourself and you will see what path you lead.” said Ivo who walked right beside her.
It was a while before the finally reached the castle where they had stopped and had something to drink and something little to snack on and then headed the rest of the way to the old castle that was still up. They had talked all the way up laughing at a few things and then stopped for a while. Calypso had told Ivo everything she knew about her aunt and what she heard from her aunt about her parents and where she was born where he did the same. Finally when they had reached the castle they stopped and looked at it with amazed eyes at the very site of it and looked down at the small town which was at least ten miles away.
“We went a long way already might as well go inside shall we. It looks like we could find some amazing things inside wonder what there will be in there. What do you think Ivo?” asked Calypso who turned back to the castle.
“Might be some suits of armor and long tables with a big chandelier with half burned down candles and flights of stairs that lead to different parts of the castle and loads of rooms. Along with a possible dungeon too and a library with loads of books that no one has seen and countless of other things. But that’s why we are here we are here to see those things even though we may not see all of it all today.” said Ivo who then tried to open the door by force which didn’t work of course.
“I think you have to pull instead of push. Here I will help you with that Ivo I don’t think we could do it alone.” said Calypso who grabbed one of the ring bars that was to open the doors and both her and Ivo began to pull and the door slowly opened for them.
“Wow this is amazing I can’t believe that its this huge. Look at all the interesting things that are here from long ago. Its amazing, all this stuff I mean and look at that skin of a bear its totally cool. Lets go up the stairs and see what we can see up there then we can come back down here when we are ready to leave.” said Ivo who ran up the stairs.
“Ivo wait, be careful you don’t know what may…happen,” said Calypso and Ivo fell through a trick stair that lead to who knows where and he was hanging on the stone ledge afraid and screaming for her to help him, which she did by running over and grabbing his wrists and pulled him up.
“Whoa that was wicked Calypso I thought I was going to land on something that didn’t look like you should land on it. Plus I saw something strange it looked like a strange figure coming to me like it wanted me to fall and it would have taken me some where.” said Ivo extremely pale.
“It could have been your mind playing tricks on you and you thought you saw something that wasn’t there. You know I am beginning to wonder about this place if its really haunted or if its just plain spells or something. Lets be quick about this and then we can leave. We should go to the library first and then we can visit some of the other rooms later and some other time. What do you say, Ivo?” asked Calypso.
“That would be a better plan then anything else. Hey, exactly where is the library here anyway? I mean the castle is so huge that it could be anywhere so we possibly could get lost.” said Ivo who took a glance at Calypso with a small terrified look and noticed that she began to pale as well with fright.
“I have no idea where the library is I thought you knew. It could possibly be on one of the many floors of this castle but we might as well go take a look for our selves it might come in handy some day. Or…just wait a minute. Majestic can you do something for me. I need for you to find the library in this place it’s a place full of books then when you find it come back here and bring us there, please.” said Calypso who then pulled out a small piece of parchment and a small pen and gave it to Majestic to write down a map for them when she got there.
Ivo and Calypso watched as Majestic the lemur went bounding up the stairs and disappeared out of sight to find the library. They didn’t speak much during that time, to terrified to say anything, but they new they couldn’t stay there for to much longer for if the house was haunted, which Calypso didn’t think so, they would be found easier. Ivo took out a piece of paper and began writing something on the piece of paper which Calypso didn’t look till he was done writing the stuff down. It was a letter to his mother explaining where they were and that they probably won’t be down at the town till later that day.
“Hey, Calypso, I was wondering if you could have Majestic bring this down to my mother so that she knows where I am and that we are fine. If that wouldn’t be to much trouble for Majestic.” said Ivo. Calypso nodded her approval knowing it would be best for his mother to know just in case she was worried where her son may be though as far as she knew on what Ivo said it wouldn’t have matter all to much.
The time went by where Ivo and Calypso waited for Majestic to return to where they were and Ivo and Calypso began playing a game that was, in a way, related to the game hopscotch. Calypso and Ivo where having a lot of fun playing short but fun games that they nearly forgot that they were in the castle that appeared, but wasn’t at all true, to be haunted. Majestic came bounding up to them an hour after Calypso had told her to find the library and the piece of paper that Majestic drew a map in order to find the library. Majestic jumped onto Calypso’s arm and climbed to her shoulder and handed her the piece of paper.
“Thank you Majestic. I have another favor for you to do if you would. I would like you to take Ivo’s letter that he wrote and bring it to his mother, the one in the big house, we visited there yesterday. Give it to her and then go straight to my aunt who will take care of you there.” said Calypso who had Ivo hand Majestic the letter and Majestic left with a flick of her black and white tail.
“Alright we have the map that Majestic drew out, which I am confused on how she did it, and now we can go find the library and research on the castle and the town. I really want to know how the plague began and what it did to the people here in this place though.” said Ivo who looked at the map in Calypso’s hands.
They headed to where the library was supposedly at and when they got to the room they looked at each other and then entered the room and what they saw there was something magnificent. The room looked brand new polished wood tables and chairs that didn’t collect dust and thousands of books in their places without any fading or anything wrong with them in fact. Hanging from the ceiling that looked like a chandelier was a beautifully crafted sea serpent (a water dragon) with blue scales and gold spikes coming from its back. What got their attention was the crescent moons in its eyes, which were almost like light silver and the crescent moon on its forehead it was the most beautiful thing that they saw in this whole castle.
“That is the legendary serpent of the seas. It was said that it would be born in the century where it wouldn’t fit in like normal but either in human form or serpent form it wouldn’t fit in with either species. The Greek goddess Selene was said to have blessed it with powers that no one would understand but the heathen goddess Calypso also blessed the person with the ability to transform into this magnificent beast of the sea.” came a voice behind the two children who both jumped at the sound of the voice.
“What do you know about those who are blessed by the goddess Selene? Do you live here? What do you know of this place, the castle and of course the people who once lived here?” asked Ivo.
“I know of lots of things, child. I have only read things in the books about those very few who are blessed and those things that I know are very little though. It was said that a child who either lost a family member or is a chosen one will be blessed and the one who is the serpent of the seas will be the best and the leader of all of those who have the mark. That person will not only lead those with the mark but also be the ruler of the seas and will become all powerful. I do live here by the way and I know a lot of what happened to those who lived here at one point.” said the man.
“Could you tell us a little about what happened, please, sir. It would be nice to know what happened. We just wanted to know what really happened and what became of the people who got the plague.” said Calypso.
“Hmm. Your both blessed by the goddess of Selene. How interesting that is. Before I tell you what happened, because you said please, I would like you to answer me my question. What are you named? I mean what is your name.” said the man.
“I am Ivo I was born on the island but my father was a thief and a good one at that but I don’t know what happened of him and I don’t care. I don’t have any special ability, well not yet but I hope to soon enough.”
“I am Calypso I was born on Madagascar and I was born of a pirate lord. My mother died after giving me my name which I am proud of. I just turned fourteen today and I am proud of it.”
“Y-your…you’re the one that was…blessed by the goddess of the seas you’re the one who will. Great I am in the presence of a young sea serpent and the one who will command the ocean.” gasped the man.
“What do you mean? I couldn’t be the one that you are talking about. I don’t know how to lead and if I could wouldn’t I be doing it now rather then being here? But anyway tell us the story of the plague and the people here, please.” said Calypso. “Alright I will. You better sit down and listen to my story for it is a long one at that but I don’t know where to start though. Oh, well here it goes.” said the man who took a seat in the old and quiet comfortable chair and continued.
“A long time ago in early B.C., before Christ, a war lord made the small but now large village on this island and had his castle built here. When his people, from a country beyond our boarder, came on a ship they settled in the village living like they always did and made crops and brought farm animals here to survive and prosper. They were comfortable for many years and had at least a couple children born on the island while they lived here. They made a school for the children to go to and learn things that would help them in the future along with being able to have a decent home.
“Thirty years had past when the people from the distant land came and the war lord, now 49 years old, had made a great home and had children of their own along with being able to sell things and earn money. There was something that they didn’t anticipate on, the plague, for it came that year. The war lord’s daughter who now, by this time, is 19, survived the plague along with her father, and only ten people along with them survived the plague. Those few that did became immortals and what they became each night, and for two hundred or so years until they could control it, was more then just dangerous but it was extremely horrifying. Those poor people became werewolves that look like plain wolves to any one’s eye.” said the man.
“What happened next? Did all the people turn into werewolves or did only five did and some of the rest turn into something else?” asked Ivo.
“Well only three turned into werewolves, two other people along with the war lord’s daughter turned into serpents of the air or water like the dragon. The war lord turned into something else entirely though he turned into a werepyre which is vampire/werewolf mix. So some how after five years the daughter was beginning to be fed up with her father and killed him but that is a mystery for werepyres are hard to kill but she was able to transform into a water serpent. So the war lord died and after ten years or so maybe 15 at the most the daughter had given birth to three children who were water serpents but couldn’t change. After that though she was killed by the King. The people on the island are still alive but they are gone, away from the island but more people came to the island and now we, except you Calypso, are descendants of those who moved here.”
“Well that’s interesting I never thought that the plague could have such power and to actually make people into horrid monsters. I bet it stunk to have to turn into those beasts and not want to at the time and place. So those who became immortal had children on the island as well? I mean they had a life here till they wanted to move, right?” asked Ivo.
“It depends on what you call normal but yes they did live here and had a life here for a time. Yes they moved at least one hundred and fifty years ago. Which is sort of sad but that’s the way of life, for them.” said the man.
“What became of them though? I mean did they become pirates or something? I just thought that they couldn’t have done a good job of traveling if they couldn’t get past the large body of water that separates our land from the land of other people.” said Calypso.
“Well, two of them live somewhere in Europe but in two different parts so that their ruling didn’t or doesn’t conflict with the other’s ruling. The rest became immortal pirates that rule the sea and their ruling is different from other pirates but that’s the way of a pirate.” said the man.
“We need to go. Thank you for your time we didn’t want to really bother anyone but we just wanted to see what the castle had at the time being but we may be back. Thank you again for the time that you gave us it does make a difference. Good bye.” said Ivo.
“Well I hope that you two enjoy yourselves and it was nice to see you again. I still can’t believe that I met you Calypso and good luck in the future because we won’t, unless necessary, meet again. The seas are a terrible place but you will do just fine.” said the man.
Ivo and Calypso left the castle disappointed that they didn’t find any gold but happy that they at least survived the adventure of the castle. Calypso was more pleased that they weren’t going to spend the night in the dreaded castle but if they had no other choice it would have been better then being outside in the rain.
“Well the best part is that we had a fun time and that we at least didn’t get hurt during our time there. Are you going to be in town tomorrow, Calypso?” asked Ivo.
“I plan on it but we, my aunt and I, may leave not tomorrow but the next day. Hey, do you think that your mother would allow you to come with us to the farm? We could spend some time together and such.” said Calypso.
“She may but I don’t know if she would. It would be nice to see your home and walk around your place. Do you think the man was telling the truth about the sea serpent that would be all blue with gold spikes and talons?” asked Ivo.
“He could have been telling the truth but we shouldn’t doubt what he has said for it could be useful information when the time comes. We may need it and use it when it would suffice. Well I need to get back to the inn I will see you tomorrow Ivo.” said Calypso.
They said their good byes and then departed for the night. Ivo was extremely happy and had been thrilled for the adventure that he totally forgot that his mother was talking to Calypso’s aunt that day.
By the next day however Aunt Angelia decided that they would be leaving the village that day because they earned what they needed and to Calypso’s surprise Ivo was coming along with his things. Calypso didn’t think that he would have found out that she was leaving that day and that she didn’t have time to tell him that she was going to be leaving.
“Well I couldn’t let you leave. You think that you could have slipped out of my grasp that easily? Well your wrong I found out. My mother told me and I asked her and she said that was fine that I could go with you. Anyway I had a great time with our adventure yesterday so I thought that many more were about to come as well when I was with you. So I am coming with you.” said Ivo who had a horse to ride to the home where Calypso and Angelia lived.
“Yeah I guess I didn’t realize that you would fallow no matter what. I guess that is what friends are made for huh? Well lets be on our way.” said Calypso and they rode to the home with a good speed that they actually got to the home early enough for lunch time and then the two could play outside for a good time and get into some sort of trouble.Chapter Five
Three days had passed since Ivo had joined Calypso on her way back to Aunt Angelia’s home and he fully enjoyed it. They had a great time playing by the secret lake that Calypso had found in the woods and they had some experiences there. Calypso and Ivo were there at this very moment and they were about to experience something extremely different and something incredible.
“Hey do you think that old guy was right? I mean do you think that I will become the sea serpent?” asked Calypso.
“Its possible but I don’t see how we would know. Do you know anything about transforming? Maybe that will help. Why don’t we try it when we are in the water. Maybe that will be the solution to the problem.” said Ivo.
“Okay but if it is then don’t stay in the water. Let me go in first so that if it is true we can know. So I am going in.” said Calypso who touched the water and went chest high in the water after a few seconds nothing happened but then all of a sudden something kicked in.
The transformation started and her face began to stretch and her body was too and the scales were coming along with the long tail. Her arms and legs stretched to a great length about a foot longer. After the transformation Calypso was fully transformed into the beast the guy mentioned she was the sea serpent extremely large and beautiful with golden spikes and nails. Calypso’s fangs were also gold and beautiful.
“Wow that’s amazing I wonder if you would be able to stay in that form when on ground. Do you think you could?” asked Ivo.
“Probably not but I think we could find out. Hey maybe once I get stronger I could go on the ground.” said Calypso Telepathically.
“Its worth the shot.” said Ivo who was leaning up against a tree and watching her with curious eyes.
“Calypso come back to the house quickly please. Your father is here to take you on his ship. Ivo please come as well.” said Angelia.
“My father is here? Great this is just great. Now that we have figure out my power and all along with me being able to get back to my original form my father is here. Do you still want to come with me Ivo?” asked Calypso.
“I guess he is. I still want to go with you. What else do I have to do here on the island anyway? Where ever you are going there is bound to be more adventures and a whole lot more fun. Come on we might as well go.” said Ivo.
“That’s great. Now we are going to become pirates. That is going to be different but then again its going to be more exciting then being here and going into the castle.” said Calypso as they headed back to the house.
There at the house was an extremely tall man with a beard that was dirty but cut decently and he wore a large pirate hat, a pirate patch over his right eye. He also wore a white peasant top, which is a very light cloth, black breeches, which are pants, black leather boots and a black leather long coat. At his side was a sword that was in a black sheath along with that it was like the Night’s sword instead of those England swords that were far more lighter then those of a Night’s.
“This is your father Calypso. Captain Lernard this is your daughter and her friend Ivo. Go grab your things and get ready to go.” said Angelia.
“Really tall for fourteen don’t you think? I never guessed that she would grow that fast. Well anyway it’s a good thing that I am going to train her to be a pirate.” said Captain Lernard.
“I have everything. I am ready Captain when ever you are.” said Calypso five minutes later.
“That’s good say good bye to your aunt and then we can go.” said Lernard who began to walk slowly back to a black ship.
“Aunt Angelia thank you so much for taking me in it means so much to me now that I realize it because if it weren’t for you I think I would have been a goner.” said Calypso.
“Its not a big deal sweaty. Come here. When you and Ivo leave this Island I want you to watch him carefully.” said Angelia who gave Calypso a great big hug.
“I will don’t forget to let his mother know that Ivo is with me on a pirate ship to become a pirate. She would desperately want to know. Goodbye.” said Calypso with Majestic still on her shoulder.
“Good bye Angelia it was nice to finally meet you.” said Ivo who then gave her a hug as well.
“It was nice to meet you too now go before Captain Lernard gets to angry." said Aunt Angelia.
